Hoshiarpur, September 15

Accusing SHO Bullowal Sulakhan Singh of using the mining law as a tool to fleece money from those doing the legal sand and gravel business, an accused booked under the Mining Act on September 12 late night, Michael, son of Ram Prakash, a resident of Katowal village in Hoshiarpur district, sought cancellation of the FIR registered against him. He warned that if he did not get justice he would go to court and seek other options of protest too. Addressing a press conference here at the Press Club, Michael said that his driver was going on a trolley taking sand legally purchased by him, but the Bullowal police rounded him up and took him to the police station. He alleged that despite showing copies of all sand bills, the SHO not only detained his driver but also filed a false FIR of illegal mining against him and the driver.

Michael said that when someone told him that his driver was detained by the police, he took all the papers and reached the police station immediately. He alleged that SHO Sulkhan Singh asked to pay a ‘bribe’ of Rs 10,000 for leaving the trolley. When I refused to pay the bribe, he filed an FIR of illegal mining against us. He alleged that the SHO had earlier been demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 per month and kept threatening that if he did not pay the money, he would not allow him to do business. Michael also alleged that the cash of Rs 8,850 was also reportedly taken away by the SHO's gunman and another man in civvies from my driver's pocket. He said, “I had also contacted the DSP over the phone complaining in this regard but it was too of no use. I also informed Mining Department official Harinderpal Singh and apprised him of the matter. Michael accused the SHO Bullowal of sheltering the people indulged in illegal mining in Dingana and Niara villages under his police station and in return, he collects Rs 7,000 a month from every trolley driver legally doing sand and gravel business. Michael urged the district police chief to interfere in the matter and order for cancellation of the FIR registered against him. Jatinderpal Singh, Ravi Kumar, Sunil Kumar, Gurb Sha Singh, and Ashok Kumar were present with him on the occasion.

When asked about the allegations, SHO Sulakhan Singh said that the trolley driver could not produce any document which led to the registration of illegal mining case and trolley was seized. Denying the charges of bribery, the SHO said he did not ask for any bribe from anyone. On being asked about the money taken from the driver's pocket, the SHO said the investigating officer deposited all documents in Malkhana at police station. He dismissed the allegations of bribe, saying that he never met Michael, them how could he seek money from him.
